전남도립미술관에 따르면 전시는 오는 29일 종료 예정이었으나, 전남도민과 전국 곳곳 관람객의 뜨거운 호응에 답하고 관람 기회를 확대하기 위해 국립현대미술관과 협의 끝에 연장을 결정했다. 지난 8월 17일 시작된 특별전은 9월 말 기준 약 3만 5천여 명의 관람객이 방문했다.

이번 전시는 국립현대미술관의 이건희컬렉션 지역순회전 사업의 일환이다. 문화와 예술을 사랑한 고(故) 이건희 삼성그룹 회장이 보여준 기증의 의미를 되새기고자 기획됐다.

전남도립미술관에서 두 번째로 선보이는 이건희컬렉션 특별전으로, 지난 2021년 첫 특별전에선 도립미술관이 기증받은 19점의 작품을 집중적으로 소개했다. 이번 전시에선 국립현대미술관, 대구미술관 기증작까지 폭을 넓혀 총 43명의 60여 점을 선보인다.

‘이건희컬렉션 한국근현대미술 특별전: 조우’는 한국 근현대 작가들이 표현한 그림의 주제와 작가의 노트에 쓰인 말에 흐름을 따라가 세 개의 주제로 나눠 작품을 소개한다.
