과거 나라의 안녕과 번영을 기원하는 사직단의 역사적 소재를 활용, 사람들의 소원이 모여 은하수가 돼 사직공원으로 내려와 빛의 숲을 완성한다는 스토리텔링으로 구성했다.

조명·영상이 함께 어우러진 융복합 콘텐츠를 구축하고 시민들의 체험·반응에 따라 변화하는 인터렉티브 콘텐츠를 통해 다양한 포토존과 볼거리를 제공할 예정이다.

광주시는 유네스코 미디어아트 창의도시로서 위상을 높이고 시민이 일상생활 공간에서 미디어아트를 경험할 수 있도록 2019년부터 미디어아트 창의벨트 조성사업을 시작했다.

지난해 3월 준공한 미디어아트 창의벨트 1, 2권역 사업은 아시아문화전당 일대와 금남로 공원에 ‘민주와 인권’, ‘힐링과 치유’라는 권역별 주제로 조성됐다. 3, 4권역은 ‘광주의 시간 여행지’를 주제로 사직공원과 양림동 일대에 광주의 역사와 함께해온 미디어아트 플랫폼을 통한 야간경관 조성을 추진했다.

‘사직 빛의 숲’은 미디어아트 페스티벌과 연계해 시범운영 중이며, 안정화 테스트를 거쳐 11월 말 정식오픈할 예정이다.
