(무안=브레이크뉴스) 이학수 기자=전남도는 과학기술정보통신부의 ‘탄소포집활용(CCU) 메가프로젝트’ 사업에 여수 GS칼텍스 부지가 선정돼 석유화학산업의 탄소중립 친환경산업화에 탄력을 받게 됐다고 밝혔다.

탄소포집활용 메가프로젝트는 이산화탄소 공급부터 제품 활용까지 탄소포집활용 전주기 밸류체인을 구성해 탄소포집활용 기술 설비를 구축하고 실증 연구개발(R&D)을 추진하는 정부 예산 9천억 원 규모 대형 프로젝트다.

이번 부지 선정 공모엔 총 27개 컨소시엄이 제안, 여수(정유화학), 충남 서산(석유화학), 강원 강릉(시멘트), 경북 포항(철강), 충남 보령(발전) 5곳이 선정됐다.

여수지역 선정 사업은 GS칼텍스가 주관하고 여수국가산단 내 부지를 활용해 정유화학 공정에서 발생하는 이산화탄소를 올레핀과 납사와 같은 기초 화학물질로 전환하는 공정을 실증하는 것이다. 이를 통해 연간 약 3천322만 톤의 온실가스 저감이 기대된다.
