강도형 장관은 이날 신안 압해읍 송공해변과 분재공원 선착장을 방문해 해양쓰레기 수거 현장과 선상집하장을 점검하고 바다환경지킴이 등 관계자를 격려했으며 전남도 건의사항을 청취했다.

이 자리에서 박영채 전남도 해양수산국장은 “육상, 외국 기인 등 발생원인이 불분명한 광역 해양쓰레기를 지자체가 열악한 지방재정으로 수거처리하는데는 한계가 있고, 기반시설도 부족하다”며 “도서, 해안가 등에 유입된 해양쓰레기의 신속한 수거처리를 위해 국비 지원율을 현재 50%에서 70%로 상향, 공공집하장 등 인프라 확충, 해양환경정화선 신규 건조를 위한 정부 지원 등이 필요하다”고 건의했다.

이에 대해 강도형 장관은 “날로 중요성이 커지는 해양폐기물 문제에 선제적으로 대응하기 위해 발생 예방부터 수거 처리까지 전주기적 관리를 위한 다양한 정책을 추진하고 있다”며 “해양쓰레기 국비 지원과 해양환경정화선 등 인프라 확충 필요성에 공감하고 재정당국과 지속 협의하겠다”고 말했다.

한편 전남도는 지난해 해양쓰레기 수거처리를 위해 정화사업, 조업 중 인양쓰레기 수매사업, 바다환경지킴이 운영, 선상·육상집하장 설치 등 16개 사업, 403억 원을 들여 해양쓰레기 4만 2천 톤(전국 13만 1천톤 대비 32%)을 수거했다.
