(브레이크뉴스 광주·전남) 이학수 기자=전남도립미술관은 2024년 2월 18일까지 ‘황영성 초대전: 우주 가족 이야기’를 개최한다.

한국 현대미술을 대표하는 원로작가 황영성 화백의 초기 구상회화 작품부터 현재까지 이어온 최근 작품까지 회화, 설치, 아카이브 자료 등 총 110여 점을 선보인다.

황영성 작가는 1941년 강원도 철원에서 태어나 6·25전쟁 당시 전남 광주에 정착해 조선대 미술학과 및 대학원을 졸업했다. 1965년 나주 영산포에서 첫 개인전을 연 이후 1967년 국전에 입선하며 6차례의 특선과 1973년 국전 문화공보부 장관상을 수상했다.

1990년대 이후부터 미국, 프랑스, 독일, 중국 등 세계에서도 작품성을 인정받으며 현재도 꾸준히 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 그의 회화를 한 단어로 꼽자면 ‘가족’이다. 60여 년간 일관되게 천착해 온 가족은 소박한 시골집 가족부터 대자연의 뭇 생명으로 확대되고 마침내 세상 만물의 공생을 담은 우주 가족으로 확장된다.

가족에 대한 근원적 그리움에 바탕을 두면서 세상과 화폭을 잇는 다각도의 작품세계를 선보일 이번 전시는 전남도립미술관 5개 전시장에 시대별로 여섯 개의 주제로 구분해 선보인다.

1부 ‘자연주의 구상회화’는 1950년대 말부터 1960년대까지 작가의 수업기부터 화단 등단에 이르는 초기 작품으로 꾸며졌다.

2부 ‘회색빛 향토서정’은 작가가 말하는 ‘회색의 시대’로, 마을과 가족의 개념을 회색조 회화로 변용시킨 1970년대 연작이다. 3부 ‘녹색 들녘과 가족’은 회색의 시대에서 ‘녹색의 시대’로 이어지는 전시다. 1980년대 마을과 산야를 넓게 내려다보는 부감 시점을 택하면서 싱그러운 생명력의 기운을 목가적인 녹색의 전원 풍경으로 표현한 작품을 선보인다.

4부 ‘이국여행 고대 문명 탐방’은 유럽 곳곳과 고대 문명 탐방을 통해 더욱 너른 세상을 향한 작가의 진취적 세계관을 엿볼 수 있다. 5부 ‘만유공존 우주 가족’에선 다양한 재료와 묘법을 통해 실험적 조형세계를 보여주는 2000년대 이후 작품으로 이뤄졌다.

6부 ‘멈춤 없는 화업정진’은 지난날 거쳐온 숱한 ‘가족 이야기’를 회상하며 현재도 진행 중인 작가의 최근 회화 작품으로 장식했다. 또 작가의 긴 화업의 과정 중 마주한 다양한 순간을 관객이 함께 만끽할 수 있도록 사진, 영상 등 아카이브 시각 자료로 연출했다.

이지호 도립미술관장은 “황영성 화백은 한국의 현대미술을 대표하는 원로작가로 국내외 다양한 지역을 오가며 예술에 대한 쉼 없는 도전과 열정을 보였다. 이번 초대전을 통해 만물에 대한 포용과 인류애의 가치를 느끼는 따뜻한 시간을 보냈으면 한다”고 밝혔다.
