Wando Abalone Breaks into Japanese Market: Gyeongyeong Fisheries Ships 430 Million Won Worth of Exports Achievement Supported by Jeonnam Marine & Fisheries Startup & Investment Support Center; Live and Steamed Abalone Bound for Japan
(Naju/Wando = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su — High-quality seafood products from a promising marine and fisheries company in the Jeonnam region are making their way to Japan, accelerating efforts to capture the global market. The Jeonnam Marine & Fisheries Startup & Investment Support Center announced that it successfully held a shipment ceremony for Gyeongyeong Fisheries’ abalone products bound for Japan at the company’s site in Wando-eup, Wando-gun, Jeonnam, at 3:00 PM on the 10th. This ceremony was organized to showcase the significant results achieved through the Center’s support programs, share the success of the beneficiary company’s entry into overseas markets, and establish a foundation for the sustainable expansion of global exports. Gyeongyeong Fisheries was selected for the "Export Package Support Program"—a tailored initiative run by the Jeonnam Marine & Fisheries Startup & Investment Support Center—and received assistance with customized overseas marketing and sales channel development. Leveraging this intensive support, the company succeeded in signing a major export contract worth $276,557 (approximately 430 million KRW) with a Japanese buyer. The key items being exported include live abalone harvested from the pristine waters of Wando, as well as high-value-added processed products such as steamed abalone and sliced abalone. These products incorporate advanced freshness-preservation and specialized processing technologies tailored to local consumer needs; the shipment serves as objective proof of the excellence of Jeonnam’s clean seafood and the outstanding product competitiveness of Gyeongyeong Fisheries in the global market. The distribution industry anticipates that this achievement will serve as a powerful catalyst, not merely resulting in a one-off export deal but driving continuous future orders. Key figures attended the shipment ceremony to mark the occasion, including representatives from the organizing agency—the Marine Bio Headquarters of the Jeonnam Bio Industry Foundation—and the participating agency—the Mokpo Seafood Support Center—as well as CEO Choi Gyeong-yeong and staff from the beneficiary company, Gyeong-yeong Fisheries Co., Ltd. The event proceeded with an opening and introduction of guests, followed by a report on the export shipment process, a commemorative photo session, and a discussion among stakeholders to strategize on expanding sales channels and increasing future exports. An official from the Jeonnam Marine & Fisheries Startup & Investment Support Center emphasized, "Gyeong-yeong Fisheries' successive export successes to Japan are a remarkable achievement that once again proves the outstanding quality and strong global competitiveness of Wando abalone." The official added, "We will continue to provide comprehensive support to marine and fisheries companies in the Jeonnam region—which possess excellent technology and products but face challenges in entering overseas markets—so that they can successfully establish themselves globally and steadily expand their exports." Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Marine & Fisheries Startup & Investment Support Center project is a key initiative fostered by local governments, jointly funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeollanam-do Province, and Mokpo City. The project is being executed through a close, collaborative partnership between the organizing agency, the Jeonnam Bio Industry Foundation, and the participating agency, the Mokpo Seafood Support Center. The center is currently spearheading efforts to enhance the added value and global competitiveness of the local marine and fisheries industry by providing comprehensive, customized support programs—spanning from startup to overseas expansion—for marine and fisheries enterprises in Jeollanam-do. These programs include specialized startup training and initial funding, support for new technology development and investment attraction for promising products, assistance in pioneering global markets, and support for participation in major domestic and international fisheries trade shows.
