Mayor Kang Ki-jung: “Launch of the Integrated Special City is a Golden Time for a Leap into a ‘Prosperous Cultural City’”

Gwangju Cultural Foundation Board Meeting Held on the 19th… Sharing Cultural Policies Linked to the ‘Special Act on the Integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam’ Accelerating the Construction of a Massive Cultural Belt, Including Attracting Three Major National Cultural Facilities and Creating a K-Content Tech Town

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Ahead of the launch of the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City’ this coming July, Gwangju Metropolitan City is setting out to build a world-class cultural economic zone by utilizing the exceptional financial support and special provisions stipulated in the Special Act.

On the 19th, Gwangju City held a board meeting of the Gwangju Cultural Foundation at the Foundation’s multi-purpose room and announced a blueprint for major cultural policies centered on the 18 key provisions contained in the ‘Special Act on the Integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam.’

Based on the Special Act’s provision regarding the ‘priority installation of cultural and tourism infrastructure,’ Gwangju City is expected to accelerate efforts to attract three major national cultural facilities: the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the National Museum of Korean History, and the National Assembly Library. In particular, the plan envisions connecting the entire city into a single massive cultural belt by linking the ‘Asia Culture and Arts Village,’ to be built on the former Jeonbang and Ilshin Textile sites, with complex shopping malls and the Asian Culture Center (ACC).

Plans to foster the content industry are also taking concrete shape. The city plans to invest approximately 250 billion won to create the ‘K-Content Tech Town’ and establish a super-regional industrial hub where AI (artificial intelligence) and content converge. Through this, the city aims to generate tourism synergy by combining Jeonnam’s maritime and historical resources with Gwangju’s technological prowess, and complete an ecosystem that encompasses the webtoon and animation cluster in the eastern region.

Efforts to strengthen competitiveness by utilizing the shared historical assets of Gwangju and Jeonnam are also being pursued. The city will designate a special historical and cultural zone connecting the Mahan, Later Baekje, and modern history, and will begin the process of inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list through joint research on the modern heritage of Yangnim-dong and the Christian missionary bases in Suncheon and Mokpo, Jeonnam. In addition, plans are underway to solidify a sustainable arts ecosystem by establishing a Cultural Promotion Fund and a Special Account for Cultural Regeneration to expand support for artists' creative work and transforming underutilized spaces into hubs for young artists.

Mayor Kang Ki-jung stated, “We must usher in an era of ‘In Gwangju’ and ‘In Jeonnam’ where people do not need to leave for Seoul in search of good jobs and cultural facilities,” adding, “I will do my utmost to ensure that citizens of the unified city can enjoy a lifestyle with even more culture than in Seoul.”

Meanwhile, the board meeting held on this day included an analysis of last year’s achievements and in-depth discussions on this year’s regional cultural development strategy.
